Superb Ski Conditions across France
Weve had approximately 2m of snow in the last week. The snow has been so prolonged that lifts have been stopped, the railroad train has been stopping at Chamonix train station and not going up to Switzerland. Several roads have been closed past our chalet holiday accommodation and avalanche warnings released.
Compare this to a few winters ago, when there was the incredibly mild Feb conditions, earth showing on pistes, and warnings that global warming would mean the end of snowboarding in the European Alps. The OECDs study from 2005 warned that global warming could make skiing holidays far too expensive for many snowboarders, with one third of ski fields shutting with the thawing of alpine glaciers. Glaciologists assert that it is impossible to assign these yearly deviations in the snow conditions to the outcomes of global warming.
So we could be experiencing the biggest downturn in almost 25 years, and the Pound has dropped to more lows compared to the Euro, but the skiing is excellent, and the recent reservations highlight that snowboarders are keen to enjoy the superior snow conditions. This season is certainly the best in nine winters, and lots of skiers are announcing that it is the finest ski snowboarding conditions in 10 seasons.
Notwithstanding remember that snow like this means big avalanches risks.
