Broadband Users to Increase Manifold in Next Five Years

Research group Futuresource Consulting has put forth its estimates for broadband over the next five years. The prediction is that around 60% of broadband users would be on DSL by 2010. It is also expected that broadband take-up will rapidly increase, so as to cross the milestone of 500 million for the first time by the end of 2010.

It has also been estimated that the number of take-ups will see a decline in developed countries, thus affecting the overall growth, but the increase in next five years is to be seen in Africa and Middle East, where the interest in internet has been increasing over the years. Contrary to the decline in the developed world, the take-ups are expected to increase by over 30% in one year in these regions.

A Senior Market Analyst, Patrik Pfandler pointed out that India is one of the markets to look out for in the next four years. He mentioned that India has one of the lowest penetration rates for fixed line broadband. The estimates of the market are of growth up to five times in next three years, during which the subscriber base would rise to almost 25 million.

The internet customers in Japan and South Korea are currently gaining the maximum advantage from faster broadband speeds. In comparison to the download speed of 3.6Mb in the UK, the average download speed in Japan and Korea is around 30Mb.
