If you have decided to pursue a career in nursing, your next step is to apply to a nursing school. If you live in San Francisco, you will have a number of highly regarded schools to choose from. Getting into a good program isn’t always easy, however, and the wait lists at a good school can be up to three or four years long.

So, what choices does a prospective nursing student have? If you find the wait list unacceptably long for the school of your choice, you might consider a career San Francisco nursing school, a type known as a degree school. These schools differ from the four-year university in that they tend to specialize on only one field, and tend to graduate students much more quickly.

The drawback to choosing a degree school is that it is usually quite a bit more expensive than a state university. It is also easier for them to hire larger numbers of instructors because of their attractive compensation. Many universities struggle with a staff shortage because they can’t pay as well.

In addition, if the school is accredited, you may qualify for federal financial aid in the form of loans and grants. Also be sure to check with prospective employers. Many will reimburse part or all of your tuition if you agree to work for them for a specified period of time.

Not only can these schools provide a quality nursing education, they typically have waitlists of less than a month. Consider weighing the additional cost with the time you will save, and the fact you will be able to embark on a rewarding career that much sooner.
