Malaysia’s David Nicol at the Brink of Defending HK Open Title

World number one David Nicol cruised to her fourth straight Hong Kong Open final after she outlasted Laura Lengthorn-Massaro of England in the semifinals 11-5, 11-6, 12-10 and will now face surprise finalist Omneya Abdel Kawy of Egypt who stunned tournament second seed Rachael Grinham of Australia.

David is the three-time defending champion of this prestigious tournament and will have to find her rhythm with the squash racquet in order to defeat Kawy and hoist her fourth career trophy from this event.

The squash matches took place at the revolutionary glass court located at the Plaza Hollywood in Kowloon for the first time. It took Nicol a few moments to get used to the new court in order catch up with her semifinal opponent.

Nicol easily led two sets during the match but had to toil hard in the third set as her opponent attempted a major comeback.

However, the Malaysian’s experience in the squash courts prevailed as she won the match with only a few points up.

In an interview after the match, David said that players were still adjusting with the new glass court and added that this could be a factor on her opponent’s loss, stating that Massaro started seeing the ball earlier but eventually made a lot of errors to hand over the victory to the Malaysian.
