A Few of the Common Myths Concerning BoTox Therapy
Botulinum therapy (abbreviated to Botox) is rapidly becoming established in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming an important part of any beauty routine for many people in the city.
All the same I never fail to be surprised when I hear the stories in connection with the procedure.
To follow are a selection of the popular myths that I come across everyday in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a doctor.
Mistaken Belief # 1: The muscles in my face might stiffen up!
The human face has about 60 muscles. The excessive use of these muscles over time may cause the formation of wrinkles. If too much Botox has been used the musculature responsible for expression may become over relaxed. Most doctors would use comparatively small dosages to result in you appearing ‘refreshed’, but still you will of course maintain your facial expression.
Therefore a carefully calculated amount of Botox in the right place means you should achieve a smoothing of any lines without any compromise in facial expression.
Mistaken Belief # 2: Botulinum is a toxin!
This to a small extent is true. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the correct medical nomenclature. Too great a dose may relax muscles that you do not want relaxed and can even cause serious illness.
But to help you understand the reality of the situation – an old chemist’s saying is that ‘everything is a poison – it all depends on the dose’. A large dose of any drug will result in sickness. Even water can be a poison if you take enough.
Mistaken Belief # 3: Botox injections will be painful!
Your hair is thicker than the needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine. Some people have compared the injections to a bug bite. Certainly not in the same league as compared to getting a blood test.
Mistaken Belief # 4: My face will lose feeling!
Totally untrue. Botulinum medicine works principally on the neuromuscular junction, and not on sensate nerve fibers. Just the ability to relax your muscles is impacted by Botox.
Mistaken Belief # 5. Once you begin getting Botox you need to keep it up otherwise you may wrinkle faster than ever!
Also wrong.
You can expect the first treatment to be effective for upwards of three months. Subsequent injections do last longer. The lines will eventually re-emerge as the muscle recovers its strength. Even So your wrinkles will not be any deeper than when you began your treatment.
Even if you never had Botox shots again – those lines will likely be a little less severe than if you had never been treated. This is primarily the case because you have allowed your skin to have a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the therapy.
