Poker Gods
On just about any major poker broadcast, or at any live game you might take a seat in, there comes a time when the poker online player who is all in against a big draw will clasp his hands and look up and beg please please please for his hand to hold up. Some of the louder players will often even ask aloud for the “Poker Gods” to look favorably upon them and grant their wish to stay alive, to effect what on its face is a random drawing based on numbers, though your more superstitious player might deign otherwise.
The concept of outside forces effects the results of poker online of course seems ludicrous on paper, but the idea of unseen presences controlling the odds dates back as long as most any other kind of superstition.
In Roman mythology, Fortuna is the god of fortune, capable of bringing good luck to those she looks upon with favor. In Greek myth, the goddess’s name instead is Tyche.
Though the players asking for the help of the poker gods might not be specifically referring to these archaic entities, the habit of doing so is a human concept that isn’t likely to be going anywhere any time soon.
