Windows Users in Europe to Get Browser Choice

It is a basket of choices for the European Windows users. With a legal agreement with Europe’s Competition Commission in place effective March 1, Microsoft will now offer its users a choice of alternatives to its Internet Explorer web browser.

This will enable the users to choose from a range of browsers to set up their own favourites and they can choose from a range of popular ones like Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Opera among others.

This move by the Europe’s Competition Commission brings an end to Microsoft’s monopoly in internet browsers in Europe. Users of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 who received Internet Explorer as a default setting in their PCs will now be offered with other choices too with an automatic software update from Microsoft.

As the trend shifts in favour of the discerning user, it can also be a mindboggling decision for the comfortable Windows user. According to Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC technology correspondent, it is a golden opportunity for the competition to grab a market share. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has millions of users all over the world relying on it as a primary browser and now the time has come to make a choice, he opines.

On its part, Microsoft is doing all it can to help smooth transition by offering screen shot views of how the webpage would appear after the software update. After downloading the software, a desktop shortcut will automatically appear, and users can load the browser through it.
