Nokia Files for New Patent – Self-Charging Handsets

If Nokia’s new plans works, then mobile users all over the world would be able to travel without having to worry about their phone’s battery. They would be able to charge their phones even if there is no external power source available. This also means that they would not have to invest in international chargers when travelling abroad.

Nokia of Finland has filed an American patent (http://appft.uspto.gov.) last week for a mobile handset that will be able to charge itself automatically. And no, it isn’t solar energy. It actually uses the owner’s body movements to generate the current required to run the cellphone.

The heavy inner components of the gadget like the battery or the circuit would be supported by a frame and will be made to move on two sets of rails. One set would allow them to move in the upward and downward direction will the other set of rails will be for the side to side motion and this motion, caused by the owner’s movement will generate an electric current.

It is hoped that enough current will be generated to run the phone and keep it charged continuously based on the movement of the phone’s owner, especially when there is no other power outlet in sight. This could enable users to get on to their Internet on their smartphones, without having to be concerned about losing battery.
