In a warning to all businesses, Ipswich’s Gas Safe’s Chief Executive, Paul Johnston, told press that companies using gas appliances should engage technicians who carried a legally certified license from Gas Safe and had authorized to service their appliances. The work executed by one such plumber, Andrew Davies, was found to be dangerous, posed a threat to life and property, when checked by the qualified engineer from Gas Safe. The work was done in the Kwan Thai restaurant in Ipswich, where Mr. Davies did fittings and servicing of the gas appliances after showing false credentials.

The case was jointly investigated by officers from Gas Safe as well as Ipswich borough Council. HSE inspectors found that Davies did not posses an authorized safety record.

A prohibition notice was issued to Mr. Davies on 9th March 2011, which banned him from taking up further work until he had obtained a qualifying certificate and license from Gas Safe.

At the Ipswich Magistrate Court, where the hearing took place, Davies pleaded guilty to breaching Sections 3 (2) of the Act 1974 Health & Safety at Work etc and Regulations 1998 of Regulation 3(3) of the Gas Safety (installation and Use). He was made to pay more than £3500 costs and render 100 hours of community service.

Paul Johnston stressed that unless the contracted engineer has an authorized certificate to service the gas appliance, they should not be allowed to carry out fittings or servicing of equipment.
